Guided tours

FOMU has a large team of enthusiastic guides. They offer knowledgeable and detailed guided visits. You can book a guided tour in English, Dutch or French.

The guides are trained to dialogue with the visiting group during the interactive tour. One of the methods they use is the discussion technique called Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS). VTS is the result of a collaboration between the psychologist Abigail Housen and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. The technique has become part of the educational curriculum at many primary schools in the US.

VTS revolves around three questions:

  • ‘What's going on in this picture?’
  • ‘What do you see that makes you say that?’
  • ‘What more can we find?’

Although these questions are deceptively simple, the importance of them lies in the paraphrasing of the resulting comments. The questions also stimulate participants to observe more closely, to formulate and substantiate what they see and to actively join in the conversation. The technique opens up a dialogue between the viewer and the artwork with the artwork as the starting point. The power of VTS is its potential to make visitors explore an artwork themselves - rather than depend on a guide who expounds on a particular viewpoint.

Would you like to learn more about this method? Information can be found on the VTS website.
